Micronet Gigabit Switches contributed to the largest
gamefest in New Zealand

About 600 computer geeks took up residence at Alexandra Park over Labour Weekend (23-25, October) for a 50-hour gaming marathon. Event organiser Anthony Baikie said xLAN 2004 was the largest gamefest yet to be held in the country.

Two SP684B at the core with 4-port (8Gbps) trunks were linked to three SP676BA distribution switches. All computers and switches were linked to seven Micronet SP1658A Gigabit Management Switches, which meet the Ministry of Education requirements for edge switches. The management on the SP1658A helped the event organisers to keep an eye on gamers’ machines to make sure they weren't slowing the network down with viruses, faulty NIC's or excessive file sharing.

“The base infrastructure of the event was fantastic for the duration of the event; the network and power were one of the best of any large LAN in New Zealand”, said Dee-Zilla, Managing Director of XLAN.

Entrants arrived on Saturday morning, humping enormous hard drives and terminals up three flights of stairs to reach the gaming areas. Several came prepared for a long campaign, with sleeping bags, food and plenty of coffee. The competitions involved well-known games such as Counter-Strike and Warcraft.
