"DDNS stand for Dynamic Domain Name System. It serves a similar purpose to DNS. DNS is an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Every time when a user uses a domain name to connect to the Internet, the DNS server will translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4.
Unlike DNS that only works with static IP addresses, DDNS works with dynamic IP addresses which assigned by an ISP or other DHCP server periodically and keep a domain name linked to a changing IP address. VPN is short for virtual private network, a network that is constructed by using public wires (such as the Internet) as the medium to enable user to create networks for transporting data. It uses encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network and the data cannot be intercepted. Therefore, the VPN connection across the Internet logically operates as a local area network (LAN) line between the sites.
VPN technology is designed to address issues surrounding the current business trend toward increased telecommuting and widely distributed global operations, where works must be able to connect to central resources and must be able to communicate with each other. The main purpose of a VPN is to give the company the same capabilities as private leased lines at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure.
There are two kind of VPN connection:
1. Remote user VPN: Figure 1 below show a VPN connection used to connect a remote user to a corporate intranet.
2. Remote Network VPN: Figure 2 below using a VPN connection to connect two remote sites, for example connection between the branch office router and the corporate router across the Internet.
New VPN tunneling technologies have been introduced in recent years. These newer technologies include PPTP, L2TP and IPSec as described below:
These technologies can be based on either a Layer 2 or a Layer 3 tunneling protocol. PPTP and L2TP are Layer 2 tunneling protocols; both encapsulate the payload in a PPP frame. Layer 3 protocols correspond to the Network layer, and use packets. IPSec tunnel mode is an example of a Layer 3 tunneling protocol.
*Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP): PPTP allows IP, IPX, or NetBEUI traffic to be encrypted, and then encapsulated in an IP header to be sent across a corporate IP internetwork or a public IP internetwork such as the Internet.

By connecting USB HDD, USB flash, MP3 player or USB media reader to the SP879, user can easily setup a FTP server to share or download files for local or remote users.
FTP server is compatible with FAT32, EXT2 or EXT3 format USB storage device and the storage size can up to 400GB. So please make sure the storage device is formatted with FAT32, EXT2 or EXT3 standard.

Top How to upgrade firmware on SP3368?
Open the page of Firmware Update under SYSTEM SETUP. Click Browser to point the folder which the new firmware code resides. This model´s firmware code includes two parts, rootfs.img and uImage.dat.
Select rootfs.img, click Apply to execute the procedures. It will show "Never turn off or restart the Router during the upgrade status!"
The login page will pop up while the procedures are finished.
Login the Router then go to Firmware Update page again. Select uImage.dat then click Apply to execute the procedures. It will show "Never turn off or restart the Router during the upgrade status!" again. The login page will pop up again when the procedures are finished.
Press the reset button for 10 seconds to reboot the Router. ADSL and ACT LEDs are lit then off and then ADSL LED blinks again then the firmware upgrade procedures are finished.
Re-login the Router, go to Firmware Update or SYSTEM STATUS page to check the firmware has been updated to new version.
Top What is Special Applications in the Router? And when should I use this feature in my network?
Most Internet applications use only one port to communicate with the other end. For example, WWW, E-mail, FTP, SMTP, TELNET and so on. These applications can work well through the NAT router. However, some applications like Internet telephony and Internet games require multiple communication ports. We view application like these as Special Applications. In order to use these applications, you must configure the “Special Application” option of the Router or use DMZ feature to use these applications. But sometimes we consider the DMZ is too hazardous for your server; we usually suggest user to configure the “Special Application” instead of DMZ.
The “Special Application” feature in the Router is a mechanism that enables packets destined to the specified incoming ports to pass through the firewall dynamically.
How the packets pass through the router dynamically? Since the Router will monitor all traffic passing through the Router, therefore when an outgoing packet destined to the Trigger is detected, the Incoming Ports will be opened for the source of the Trigger packet. So the incoming packets which match the port number will pass through the firewall automatically.
Top What if I have one application that the Router does not support?
Please check the application´s on-line help or web site to see if there is any information on running behind firewalls, gateway, proxy or so. Most applications will include information on how to work behind NAT router and what kind of ports need to be opened for the application.
Top Can I use Microsoft L2TP/IPSec VPN client to construct VPN tunnel with Micronet VPN router?
Our present VPN router doesn´t support L2TP/IPsec VPN tunnel.
Micronet L2TP/IPSec VPN client is developed by SafeNet. It is the VPN solutions for Windows 98, NT 4.0, ME, XP...etc. By using this VPN client, users can connect to remote network through L2TP connection, and this L2TP connection is protected through IPSec tunnel. It´s a L2TP over IPSec VPN client software.
However, Micronet VPN router doesn’t support this VPN tunnel. Because even if our VPN router can accept the IPSec connection, it still can´t further accept the decrypted L2TP packets. So in the end, the connection will still fail.
Please note that Microsoft L2TP/IPSec VPN client is different from Windows 2000 built-in IPSec/VPN solution.

For security issue, this router blocks all ports in default. Once set up the Virtual Server, it still needs to ACL page to enable access from Internet.
Please go to ACL page (under Access Management), add a ACL setting as below:

Click Save to add the sixth line then it can work well.

Top What can I get my VPN client to work through the router?
If you would like to establish VPN tunnel with a VPN server and the VPN client is behind a router, please make sure you have IPsec passthrough or PPTP passthrogh enabled on your router depending on what kind of VPN tunnel you are using.
Micronet SP883, SP880B, SP890 and SP891 support IPsec and PPTP passthrough.
VPN that use IPsec with the ESP (Encapsulation Security Payload) authentication will work fine. At least one IPsec session will work through the Router.
But VPN that use IPsec with AH (Authentication Header) are incompatible with Router. AH have limitations due to occasional incompatibility with the NAT standard.

IPSec defines 2 kinds of secure protocols, they are AH (Authentication Header) and ESP (Encapsulated Security Payload).
AH: Provide data integrity and authenticity, but not include confidentiality.
ESP: Provide data confidentiality, also can use the algorithm to confirm the data integrity and authenticity
Top What is the difference between IKE key and manual key?
IKE is short for Internet Key Exchange. Key management allows you to determine whether to use IKE key and manual key for Security Association to set up a VPN.
Autokey (IKE): Once peer sites have authenticated each other, they generate bulk encryption keys for purpose of encrypting application data packets. These keys are known only to the both sites, so the data is very well protected against modification or interpretation by attackers. Each site uses IKE to negotiate what type and strength of keys to use, as well as what type of security to protect the application traffic. These key are automatically refreshed according to IPSec policy settings to provide constant protection.
Manual key: User defines the Encryption and Authentication key by themselves.
IKE key is considered more secured than manual key, because IKE can generate new keys randomly for VPN connection.
Top What is Phase 1 ID for?
There are two phases in every IKE negotiation-phase 1 (Authentication) and phase 2 (Key exchange). Phase 1 established an IKE SA and phase 2 uses that SA to negotiate SAs from IPSec.
In IKE phase 1 negotiation, phase 1 ID is the identification for each VPN peer. By default, IP address of remote peer is treated as an indicator to decide which VPN rule must be used to serve the incoming request. Go to Maintenance >> Firmware. Click Browse to direct the folder that the firmware code resides.
Click UPGRADE to execute firmware upgrade procedures. The Status line shows the progress of the procedures.
After it is finished the dialogue window pops up to tell you “Firmware Upgrade Complete”.
Then system will ask you to log in the router again. After login the router find the reset button at the rear of the box, press the reset button for 10 seconds to reboot the router. Check the ADSL LINK LED is off then blinks, the full procedures are completed.
Re-login the Router, it shows Device Info as the front page. Check the firmware is updated to the new one.
